My opinion?  Science is the search for truth and understanding of reality, not an elevated ego-realm of some monarchist behaving academic "elite" who are empowered to decide which phenomena are studied and explored, and which are shunned and ridiculed.  All new research starts out with a skeptical scientific audience, and if scientists stop doing new research, we will never learn anything new or expand our knowledge of reality and our understanding of truth.
