Upon our passing from our current human existence, how long are we cognizant of being who we have grown used to being over the past lifetime?  I understand that the blinders apparently come off, but as an example, when I die, will I feel like "Oh crap...this is it...I'm going, going, gone!  Oh, hey, I know you guys!  Wow!  So this is what its all about?  That wasn't so bad..." and start cataloging all the differences and capabilities now available?  I guess I'm trying to figure out if I will think for awhile as "scott" with a view of the afterlife, and if so, for how long before I realize I've been there for ever and I'm just coming home.  Sorry, that's a little bumpy...

In a nutshell, am I stepping through the door into instantaneous full realization of all I am, or do I retain consciousness from the perspective of the human I was and enjoy realizing the vastly larger consciousness now unfolding before me?  If the latter, for how long before it all hits?

My past life meditations have only shown me a sense of relief upon passing, but no detail.

Most people I meet who have recently passed are fully aware of being who they were in physical life.  At this stage of passing over,  these folks are learning what it is like to live in the "astral" plane - in a spiritual reality that is part of the astral realm  - which is also accessible through astral travel when one is in a body, and where one may meet various guides and beings who may assist them in adjusting to the astral realm and to the fact that they have passed.  These guides and beings are usually  from other realms above and beyond the astral.  In this realm, whatever is comforting to the person who recently passed is presented to them, and although parts of their experience may seem a little strange at first, for the most part, they are greeted by loved ones, helpful beings, guides, angels, and depending on their religious belief system, they may see Christ or St. Peter or Mother Mary, or a Buddha, or whatever spiritual personage helps them feel most comfortable, loved, safe and protected.

An energetic level above this astral realm, is a "mental" realm which is much more expansive and has more information contained within it, especially information in non-linear time, and then above that - the monad, where big consciousness lives - less individualized and even more aware of the big picture.

Now, what I have just said is rough explanation - it's too complicated to explain in the amount of space I have here, and honestly, although I understand more than just this about life after life, I don't understand as much as I might.  As time goes on, I will experience more and understand more.  But this is my ability to answer as of today.

So, about remembering who you were - in the astral realm, most people go through a few years of remembering who they were, and presenting themselves as who they were (if it suits them.. but they may adopt other visages that suit them and they can change clothes, and looks at will.)  The general period of time for this identification with the most previous life seems to be between 10 - 20 years.  At points  in this 10 - 20 year time frame, the person in the astral realm is allowed to venture beyond the astral to learn and process more, to try to make any corrections in relationship behavior in the most recent physical manifestation that they may regret, to watch over and provide guidance and energetic support to loved ones in the physical who may be missing and grieving for them, to heal from difficult death situations.. and in many cases, to relax, recreate, and have a very good time.  Some people are very "work" oriented and will chose to reincarnate quickly, and others are more easy going and laid back and will chose to "hang out."   At some point in the reincarnation process, the memory of the previous lifetime will be removed from easily accessible consciousness... and from that time on, unless the person is unusual or gifted, or one of the helpful beings forgets to flip the "forget" switch, the person will no longer remember who they were.
